Our calculations are based on the average miles driven by an American driver, national
energy pricing statistics and data averages from the 4 million + charging sessions that
have taken place through the ev.energy app between 01 January 2020 and 01 July
2022. See a full breakdown of the data that makes up this saving calculation below.
All usage statistics are based on an average American EV driver who drives 10,000
miles a year at an efficiency of 3.5 miles per kWh.
Smart Charging Savings
Smart charging savings are calculated by showing how much money you save on your
energy consumption using ev.energy’s technology to shift your charging from ‘Peak’
energy pricing windows to ‘Off-peak’ pricing windows.
Energy Pricing
As of October 01, 2022, Californian domestic energy pricing has an average of
$0.39 per kWh. peak and off-peak charging are based on the national average of the
PG&E domestic rate. ($0.42 peak rate & $0.34 off-peak rate) See the documentation

Peak and Off-Peak Times
The most frequent peak times tend to be weekdays between 6pm-9pm, however
there is no fixed rule. Off-peak can be at any time, depending on the weather and
renewable generation on the grid. In the USA, generally, off-peak is overnight when
there is an abundance of wind or around lunchtime at the weekend when the sun is
shining. ev.energy takes care of tracking this complexity for you, ensuring you
always charge and the cheapest and greenest time every day.
ev.energy Technology Capabilities
Through multiple trials and our native app data, we have shown that ev.energy has
the capability to shift energy from the average peak service window up to 100%
(6pm-9pm). We have based the above calculations on a 97% shift in energy from
peak to off-peak pricing (Bloomberg ‘A review of real-world data from ev.energy’s
smart charging platform’, October 2021).
Solar Smart Charge Savings
The top 10% of participants in our Solar Beta Trial (N=356) completed an average of
40% of their annual charging using the energy generated from their home solar between
01 June 2022 and 30 June 2022. Our data shows that Solar Smart Charging is effective
from March to November across the USA with CA offering the ability to solar charge
year-round. Based on the average 6kWh solar array. This has been accounted for in our
annual savings calculation.
Rewards Earned
ev.energy is paid by energy networks to shift energy consumption from peak to off-peak
windows. We give this back to our customers in the form of reward points to spend on
their energy bills or through retailers.
Generating Points
ev.energy users generate 1 reward point for every charge over 7kWh.
Redeeming Rewards
You need 15 points to earn $5 in reward points as an ev.energy + user. You will need
30 points to earn $5 in rewards as a regular ev.energy user.

We use a combination of information, such as when you need your vehicle charged, energy production in your local area, your energy tariff, solar forecasting, and local energy demand, in order to optimize for the most affordable and environmentally friendly charge.

If you’re on a variable rate energy tariff, our app allows you to take advantage of cheaper off-peak rates. Savings will depend on what you live. You could save up to $925 in the US per year, £804 in the UK, or €925 in the EU.
