EV SmartCharge Rolls into the LA Auto Show: Smart Charging Takes the Spotlight

The future of electric mobility is taking the spotlight at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show, and it's about more than just the vehicles themselves. Clean Power Alliance's EV SmartCharge program is sponsoring the LA Auto Show Test Track from November 21-30, showcasing how smart charging is transforming the EV experience for drivers across Southern California.

For the thousands of attendees exploring the latest electric vehicles, Clean Power Alliance's presence signals an important message: the EV journey doesn't end at the dealership. How and when you charge at home makes all the difference for your wallet, for the grid, and for the environment.

Making Smart Charging Simple

Through the EV SmartCharge program, powered by the ev.energy app, drivers can automatically shift their charging to off-peak hours when electricity is both cleaner and more affordable. The concept is straightforward: plug in your vehicle, set a "ready by" time, and let the app handle the rest.

The system optimizes charging during the most cost-effective hours, when renewable energy is most abundant and grid demand is lowest. Not only avoiding the peak hours between 4-9 PM, but also prioritizing charging during off-peak daylight hours when solar production is high and grid congestion is low.

Need to override the schedule for an unexpected trip? The app's Boost function puts you back in control instantly.

Real Impact, Real Savings

The EV SmartCharge program is already delivering tangible results across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Drivers have collectively saved an estimated $67,000 by shifting their charging patterns, with more than 1.2 million kWh delivered through smart charging sessions.

94% of that energy was delivered during off-peak hours, and 21% during the daytime when there is significant solar generation. To date, the program has helped avoid over 21,000 kg of carbon emissions. The equivalent to the carbon sequestration of 21.1 acres of forest for a year.

For EV Drivers, the financial benefits are equally compelling:

  • $100 enrollment incentive for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) or chargers
  • $50 enrollment incentive for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs)
  • Up to $60 annually for completing at least five smart charging sessions each month
  • Average $100 per year in electricity bill savings

That adds up to as much as $260 in first-year benefits for BEV drivers and meaningful savings that accumulate month after month.

Built for California's Clean Energy Future

With EV adoption accelerating, over 1.4 million EVs are expected in Clean Power Alliance's territory by 2045, programs like EV SmartCharge aren't just convenient, they are essential infrastructure for California's clean energy transition.

By shifting demand away from peak hours, smart charging reduces strain on the grid while supporting the integration of renewable energy sources like solar. It's the kind of demand-side flexibility that makes ambitious climate goals achievable, and it puts EV drivers at the center of the solution.

While EV SmartCharge takes center stage at the LA Auto Show, it’s just one part of a broader portfolio of programs from Clean Power Alliance designed to accelerate the clean energy transition.
