How much could you save on your EV charging?

There are some easy savings to be made when charging your electric car - especially if you’ve invested in solar panels.

By using Smart Charging on a multi-rate or EV-specific energy tariff, you can have every charge optimised for the lowest price and earn rewards for protecting the energy grid.

Better still, if you have solar panels, you can automatically soak up your power generation with the battery in your electric vehicle with Solar Charging.

But, how much could you save? Let’s work it out.

How to calculate your EV charging costs and savings?

Working out your exact savings can be tricky as it depends on several factors - from your energy tariff to your vehicle usage and beyond.

To make it easy, we’ve built a free savings calculator to add up your savings based on your mileage, solar charging percentage, vehicle efficiency and energy rate/tariff.

Built with data from over 4,000,000 charging sessions from January 2020 to July 2022, plus the latest energy pricing for California and the UK, this tool can help you get an accurate personalised quote.

So now, every time you charge your Tesla at home with solar or grid energy, you can have peace of mind that you’re getting the best price.

Calculating the costs

To make the savings calculator as straightforward as possible for you, we’ve made a few assumptions along the way. Let’s run through those quickly.

In the US, we’ve calculated savings based on the PG&E Domestic Rate as of December 1, 2022. This is a $0.42 peak rate and $0.34 off-peak rate, or $0.39 for those on a single-rate.

In the UK, we’ve calculated savings based on the average Octopus Go tariff as of 1 October 2022. This is £0.40 peak and £0.075 off-peak. For those on a single-rate tariff, we’ve used the UK average at £0.283 per kWh as of 1 October 2022.

Rest assured, we update our savings calculator regularly with the latest energy prices so that you can get an accurate result.

Remember, your actual EV charging costs and savings may vary depending on your energy tariff, usage, charging times, home energy set-up and other factors. To see a full list of our assumptions, make sure to click “How we calculated this” under the calculator.
